Why should kids get in trouble for sleeping at school?

I'm not talking about the kids who sit back and allow themselves to fall asleep. I'm talking about the kids who are struggling to keep their eyes open and end up dozing off. in my school, if you fall asleep twice in a marking period, you get detention. if you fall asleep again you get suspension. It isn't their fault if they fall asleep though! you can't help it if you nod off for a little bit when you're seriously trying your hardest to stay awake. it isn't something people have control of. it just seems pointless to me to punish someone for something out of their control
